Just take the first step & start the dang thing.

Call it imposter syndrome, call it fear, call it whatever you want… but at the end of the day, nothing gets created unless you take the first step and start.

This is coming from a place of experience. I, too, have been in a place where I was too scared to put myself out there, to start the new venture, to create the new product, to take that first leap because the fear of what others would say about it and the fear of failing was hindering me from even starting.

But then it hit me, we all have gifts to share with the world. We are all here for a purpose. And I believe it’s our duty to overcome those fears and our egos so that we can share those gifts with others.

Easier said then done, I know. Sometimes you can even get in a fight/flight/or freeze mode because the fear or uncertainty is so powerful… yup, been there too.

So here are my own tips for overcoming those roadblocks and getting the courage to take the leap:

1)   Find your support group and find your partners in crime.

They are your foundation. They are your co-founders. They are your hype-men/women. They will be your sounding board when you hit a wall. If you are contemplating on starting something, take that support group out to a coffee (or wine!) to share your vision and even share your fears. They will give you the encouragement you need to trust yourself and take the first step.

2) Create a vision board.

Even if you aren’t the creative type, write down your vision in some form or fashion. I write down everything that comes to mind on a big ole white board- the dream, the environment, the success, the brand, the product name, the color scheme…etc.  When you start to see it on paper, it makes the vision more of a reality and something tangible. This is WAY easier (and much more fun!) than creating a word document plan IMO. Hang it up, and look at it every morning.

3)  Find those expanders.

You know… those people that already have accomplished what you are aiming for. They expand your mind and show you it can be done. Surround yourself with stories and people that show you daily that what you want is attainable. Podcasts, books, networking events, and friends are all great resources here. Seeing others achieve similar goals makes you believe to your core that you can accomplish them too.

4)    Do not share your vision with the world until it’s fully baked.

I repeat… do not share your vision with the world until its real. You don’t need any type of discouragement or any naysayers during this critical phase. Stick to those trusted few that can be your foundation and leave it at that! You will be able to share it in due time! Trust the process.

5)    Meditate on it

Yes I know… odd advice for those that hate the concept. But when you need the courage to begin or to keep going, sit quietly and meditate on all the incredible things you will achieve once you just start! Dream big here. Put it out there. Focus on accomplishing your dreams and what that looks like. Feel it. Believe it. Its real.

and lastly—  JUST START!

Create the blog. Create the website. Create the company. Create the product. Create the art. Whatever it is, just start.

Don’t let the goal of perfection or the fear of failure stop you from sharing your gifts with the world.
